Add these natural, nontoxic materials to Mojave Desert soil to make it fertile, improve texture, reduce salt and balance pH.
Compost loosens up hardpan, holds water, feeds plants with nitrogen, lowers alkalinity, adds beneficial soil microbes, humus
Gypsum loosens hardpan, binds up salts, lowers alkalinity, helps water soak in, adds calcium and sulfur
Worm castings add a wide variety of nutrients, beneficial microbes, humus
Rock dust adds minerals
Bird manure: use it aged or composted, adds phosphorus.
Peat moss and coir reduce alkalinity, loosen up hardpan, hold water
Egg shells crushed, powdered. Adds minerals, especially calcium
Green leaves, weeds, fruit and veg waste add organic nutrients to soil
Charcoal crushed, powdered. Provides home for soil microbes
Do Not Add
Wood ashes-- It is too alkaline
Lime-- It is too alkaline
Potassium-- Desert soil already has an excess of this. But plants are not affected by an excess, they just take what they need
Ammonium nitrate-- It’s a chemical that ruins soil, releases too fast.
